Soundset is a musical project aiming to translate visual art into electronic music. The project is organised by The Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent (Belgium).

Participants are invited to find a sound which connects them personally with a piece of art from the running exhibition “Modernism, Belgium abstract art in Europe”. Now doesn’t that sound a bit what Music For Installations is trying to do? We are happy to be invited into the project that is open for beginners as for advanced people. During the weekend of the 27th/28th of April 2013 you can find MFI back into the exhibition working on a new soundscape.

On april 30th there was a special ‘nocturne’ where the music is presented, followed by an afterparty.

A very nice evening not to forget. Thanks to Marie-Julie for the hard organisationial work.

Released on Littl’ AntennA

Released by Littl’AntennA Recordings and distributed by Belgian NeuMusik.

This album is the result from a live-set performed at Post-X in Gent. The recording seemed to hold a good quality which made it possible to present this in a beautiful release. The treatment of the audio was a little corrected to adjust to the roomtone and resonance in the building. Fun part, unfortunately not possible to present on an audio album, where the resonating walls and ceiling at certain lower frequencies.

Littl’ AntennA sits in the slipstream of the Antenna Festival, which aims to a rather eclectic electronic oriented artistry. Belgian NeuMusik is a spin-off from the ever evolving and very supportive WOOL-E Discs label.

With the very important help by Dimitri from WOOL-E Discs, the Littl’ Antenna team and Alain Kinet.

The album is placed in the sublabel Littl’AntennA Recordings as number 5.

Visuals by Niek Cornil

Niek Cornil was present to add live video during the performance. Niek reads perfectly what is happening on stage and translate this into strong video-artwork.

Some extracts are online on our YouTube Channel: music4installations.

Niek and Mfi form a strong duo on stage, bringing the music to life on different locations and occasions, grabbing the audience. The album consists of new tracks, specially created for this event, and of remixes of soundscapes from the Haukijärvi project. This album makes a fine addition for drone lovers and darker ambient friends.

It’s an interesting stroll through the Music For Installations catalogue with some extra flavours. There are quite some field recordings present, mostly from our own source.

However, it is also important to stress out the interesting world of FREESOUND with it’s everlasting source of material of sound lovers. These sounds are not always rawly used, but can be processed into some new material. Full credits follow:

Released on Wool-E Discs

Presenting the new album on the AntennA Festival, 22 of Februay 2020, where we play a live-set. The album will be release by WOOL-E Discs. Work is already some time in progress and is inspired on the small against the whole. In the music, abstract is again given a slightly more prominent role then in the latest album, without losing sight of the classical drone.

With the very important help by Dimitri from WOOL-E Discs, Lanfranco Aceti and Alain Kinet.

The album is placed in the sublabel Belgian Neumusic as Chapter number 30.

Inspiration

Little moments of truth are the building blocks in the understanding of the greatness or even the infiniteness of being. Consider these ten fragments of sound which can be perceived as all small elements, that make a bigger whole as a concept in this album. However, each of these partials are a world, a soundscape on its own. Therefore the choice of the term fractal is not by coincidence. Whether you zoom in on details, or zoom out on the global context of each soundgarden, they will still evoke a kind of infinity that can be translated in the everlasting and returning dilemma of our own being: each living element versus the whole, in which we are set to live only a infinitesimal fragment of time.

Thanks to Lanfranco Aceti to be a source of inspiration for this album.

Small and Big

It will probably stay difficult for a long time to come to grasp the concept of the wholeness of the universe as we know it, that fits into one tiny point, if you would roll back until the beginning of time. The opposite sentiment is something that everybody will once have experienced on our planet: seeing, feeling a small object, moment, feeling which seems to show you the greatness of the whole, the infinity of our existence. Once you start contemplating these contracts, from big to small, form little to grand, you will quickly hit the border of what you can explain in maths and then the metaphysical will enter the game of thought. This fascinating, sort of pulsating, way of experiencing can be seen as the source, the ground tone of the small elements that have been used to build up this album.

Littl’ AntennA is a series of small concerts or try-outs, that are held in the beautiful PostX space in Merelbeke Belgium (12 October 2019). We have the fine opportunity to present some new pieces of the forthcoming Fractions Of Unity Album, release expected in February 2020. Off course we use other scapes from old albums. The intimacy of the space gives the possibility to choose sometimes go for more unconventional tracks. So that will happen with the first-time-ever live performance of some tracks, like from the Haukijärvi cycle and from older albums like Live at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Niek Cornil is present on stage to mix video with the sounds to blend the experience into something for more then the ear alone.

Hommage Pierre Henry – Yassur parle au concrète

  • Yassur parle au concrète - Music For Installations
Update Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin.

Released on Bandcamp

This year (2017) we said goodbye to Pierre Henry. On Bandcamp you can meet some artists who created a hommage to this pioneer in integrating noise into music. All made a piece of about 4 minutes 30 seconds en ‘musique concrète’. The concept of Soundscape is not far away here, however, in musique concrète, one mostly ‘should’ start from a ‘concrete’ sound, something real which then can be processed. This differs from the absolute freedom Music for Installations uses in creating soundscapes, where the source can be anything, also virtual. Thank you Pierre.

Musique Concrète

Creation

The initiative came from Institute For Alien Research, who wanted to create an album with only reflections on Musique Concrète, al in length of 4 minutes 33 seconds. Released on the 9th of December 2017, it commemorates Pierre Henry‘s birthday.

It all dates back to Pierre Schaeffer, who named the term Musique Concrète as the representation of sound that has been reworked electronically and played through speakers. The use of ‘real’ sounds in stead of e.g. synth sounds is essential in this field. Discussion point for you and your friends: the idea was that using real sounds will result in a more human music in stead of the generated tones from synths.

Released on Databloem

Released on Bandcamp

Presenting the next finished artwork: Live at the Museum of Fine Arts: released on the DATABLOEM LABEL and also available on Bandcamp! The album is the result of an edited version of the recording of the Live Set in the Museum of Fine Arts in Gent on 28th of November 2013.

With the very important help by Niek Cornil, Marie-Julie Dellaert, MSK Ghent, Freesound.org, Ariovaldo A. Giaretta and Dennis from DATABLOEM!

I’ve been asked to set up soundscapes inspired on the theme of a forest. The live performance was in the half circled central aula of the Museum between beautiful sculptures and columns.

Niek Cornil was present to add live video during the performance. Niek reads perfectly the music and translates this into strong video. Have a look at the You Tube page of Music For Installations to see some snippets! Also present in the room was a person working with fragrants.

Inspiration

The soundscapes are inspired on the surroundings of a forest and the merging senses due to synesthesia. In the museum was on that moment also an exhibition of the painter Čiurlionis. He was known to have synesthesia. The result is based on self-created soundscapes and field recordings from personal and external sources. It is very important to mention FREESOUND which played an important role in the gathering of source material. This website is a huge effort to free recordings of all sort, ready to use as a sound or as a source of inspiration. Please check the list further down this article for full credits.

Niek and Mfi form since this performance a strong duo, bringing the music to life on different locations and occasions. The album consists of new tracks, specially created for this event, and of remixes of soundscapes from the Haukijärvi project. This album makes a fine addition for drone lovers and deep soundscapers!

With Melancholia, Lars Von Trier made a very intense movie about fear and depression. Von Trier found a way to translate these very troubled emotional difficulties, from which he struggles himself, through this incredible motion picture. This track is a tribute to Melancholia in all its intensity. It’s a reflection and translation of these emotions of which nobody dares to speak. The track itself has a less fatal ending and leaves a bit more hope while it evolves. The video is compiled by Niek Cornil. Niek has a great way to translate the sound into image as proven here.

This evening will be a mix of soundscapes and ambient music, with some reflections to the cosmic music from my other project Lounasan. Everybody will be invited to ly down on the floor and be emerged by the music.

Niek Cornil will translate the sound into live video. Niek is able to give the right image to the music, thus making the whole presentation even more stronger. Close your eyes and float on the weirdness. Free entrance!

Hannes Diehl asked me to work on his video project about strange bird creatures and fishes. The imagery resulted in a display on the walls of a building in Fortaleza, Brazil. The animals get some motion in the video and to support this movement, Music For Installations jumped in with field recordings and created soundfiles. The display was done during Vila das Artes during January and March 2015. The resulted video is posted on Vimeo by Hannes and can by looked at in this full article or on the Video page.
